Is Nixi safe to install?

· 2 min read

Nixi is a new Windows beta. We build it to keep speech recognition and AI on your PC by default, but we cannot ask you to treat that promise as an independent security audit. The current public installer is not code-signed. Decide whether that is acceptable for the PC you use.

What you can verify today

The latest public release is on our GitHub releases page. It lists the version, changes, build commit, installer size and SHA-256 hash. Download Nixi through heynixi.app or that release page, then compare your file with the hash on the release before you run it.

In PowerShell, open the folder containing the download and run:

Get-FileHash .\heynixi-windows-setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256

The value must match the SHA-256 printed on the release page. A matching hash confirms that your download is the same file we published there. It does not prove that the program is harmless.

Our privacy notice explains the data the website collects and what the Windows app stores locally. In the default setup, Nixi runs speech recognition and AI on your PC. Web searches, opening sites and optional model downloads use the network. The notice describes how to remove the email collected when you request a download.

You can also test the local claim yourself: after setup, disconnect from the internet and try dictating into a document. That checks one feature under your conditions; it is not a complete test of every network path or security property.

What is still unverified

The public beta is not code-signed, so Windows may show an unrecognized-app warning. The release page says this plainly. We have not published an independent security audit or a conclusive third-party malware analysis of the current installer. Nixi is also too new to have a long public track record. A domain reputation score is about the website's history; it cannot establish whether the Windows installer is safe.

Nixi can listen for its wake phrase and, when asked, read a screen or interact with another app. Those capabilities deserve care around sensitive work. Review its settings and try it first on a PC and in apps where you are comfortable testing a beta.

Our current answer

We can show you where the official installer comes from, how to verify its hash, what the app is designed to do with your data, and what changed in each release. We cannot yet offer a signed installer or an independent safety certification. If those are requirements for you, wait for them before installing Nixi.
